Super-fine polluting particles damage lungs, kill 15 lakh Indians every year: Study:
|
Published in Lancet Planetary Health, the study says that an annual PM 2.5 exposure of five microgram per cubic metre is potentially associated with 1.5 million deaths a year in India. In 2019, the mortality figure went up to 1.8 million. Between 2009 and 2019, they caused an estimated 16.6 million deaths.
The air pollution level in India is way above the national standard of 40 microgram annual exposure. Compared to Indian norms, the study says an estimated 38 lakh deaths have occurred in the same 11-year period, accounting for more than 5 % of total mortality.
The study shows that every 10 microgram ise in the PM2.5 level enhances the mortality risk by 8.6 %
