All doctors to have unique IDs, NMC starts registration on its portal.

Government data shows more than 13 lakh doctors are currently registered with different state medical councils. Assuming an 80 % availability rate, close to 10 lakh doctors are understood to be available for active service; however, there is no exact number due to the absence of a central database.

The NMC seeks to fill this data gap, in addition to making lives easier for both patients and doctors. A part of the NMR will be open to the public, allowing people to check a doctor’s degree and other qualifications before consulting him/her.

CMEPEDIA uses this registration number to identify physicians in their respective CME portfolios.
