Of 12,682 medical graduates who studied under the government quota since 2006-2007, only 522 have served in the villages. Only 91 of 5,348 diploma and post-MBBS students took up rural service.
Their monthly salaries during rural service vary from Rs. 35 000 for MBBS students to Rs. 55 000 for post-graduate specialisation. MBBS doctors have to complete one year mandatory rural service. Post-graduates three years.
Doctors completing postgraduate courses are reluctant to work at the primary health centres. They say their specialisation can’t be put to use at the PHCs, which work with basic amenities. Some say they have no protection from crowds that sometimes rough up doctors when a patient dies.

CMEPEDIA offers online medical education so medical practitioners delivering rural service have a similar access to up to date knowledge as their urban counterparts.
