Unsung women COVID warriors recall sacrifices for public service

D Nagalakshmi, State Secretary, Karnataka Rajya Samyuktha Asha Karyakarteyara Sangha, is a typical grassroot level worker who bore witness to the struggles of the 42,524 Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in the state. Last year, wearing their trademark pink sari uniform, they protested the street, demanding a monthly pay of Rs 12,000, the basic minimum wage fixed by the state’s labour law. Adjusted for inflation and their workload, they should get a minimum of Rs 18 000 to Rs 21000 monthly.
